Gifts of Stock and Appreciated Securities

Donating publicly traded stock and securities to the Champlain College Saint-Lambert Foundation is a tax-smart way to support the College. You will receive a tax receipt for the full appreciated value of your gift, but will only pay tax on 25 per cent of the realized capital gain. The receipt value will be for the closing trading price on the day Champlain College Saint-Lambert Foundation receives delivery of the shares. Benefits of making gifts of stock and securities:

  • Standard capital gain inclusion rate of 50 per cent on selling shares is cut in half to 25 per cent when you donate your shares to the Foundation rather than selling and donating the proceeds
  • Value of your tax receipt will be locked in at the market closing price on the day the Foundation takes legal receipt of your securities into our brokerage account
  • Claim charitable donations up to 75 per cent of your net income, plus claim 25 per cent of the taxable capital gain resulting from a gift of appreciated capital property. A five-year carry forward on any unused donation amount is permitted
  • Designate your gift to a Champlain College Saint-Lambert priority that meets your interest, such as scholarships, capital projects, programs or research

Corporate Matching Gifts

Many companies match the gifts of employees or retirees who make up our donors. You may be able to double or even triple the value of your gift to the Foundation if you are employed by one of these companies.

Please check our list of known matching gift companies (***). If you do not see your company’s name, please ask your human resources department if your company participates in a matching gift program. To make your contribution grow, simply obtain a matching gift form from your human resources office and send it with your donation.

Named Fund

Would you like to support and commemorate a special teacher, family member or classmate at the same time? A named, endowed fund allows donors to recognize the special role the College has played in their lives. The College has several named funds. The stories about the funds’ creation are often poignant and compelling. Perhaps you are an alumni who wishes to memorialize a parent or friend. Maybe you’d like to celebrate a classmate’s memory by offering educational opportunities to future students. Each endowed gift t provides a unique legacy.
