On Sunday October 24, the Champlain women's volleyball team headed to College Jean Brebeuf to compete in their second tournament of the 2010/11 season. It didn't take long for the women to prove their level of ability facing off against Cegep St-Laurent in their first match of the day. With huge hits from Anne-Marie Contofalsky and incredible sets from Kerry Wyllie the team proved to be unstoppable. Barbara Mantha played a major role at center court blocking offensive attacks and dominating St-Laurents front line. Champlain won their first set 25-23 and second set 25-22 giving the Cavaliers their first victory of the tournament. Champlain’s second game was against the host school Jean Brebeuf. Michelle Wright played incredible defence sharing her domination with Florence St-Jean who would not allow a ball to fall to the floor. Their defensive digs and power hits forced Brebeuf to a 15-25 first set loss followed with a 21-25 second set loss. The Cavaliers continued to dominate the tournament with a third game win over Marianopolis College. Danya Swoboda, Myriam Dubrueil-Coyles and Jada Chiasson stepped off the sideline and showed the strength of the Cavaliers second sting. It was not before long that power hitter Alexandra Bouchard found Marianopolis weaknesses and racked up the points. Champlain beat Marianopolis 25-11 and 25-14. The fourth and final game of the day was a bit more challenging for the Cavaliers. Cegep de Vieux Montreal also showed up to the tournament with the idea of complete domination. However, with Kim Boudreau’s spectacular hits and Sarah-Michelle Pigeons outstanding defence, the Cavaliers finished the first set winning 25-11. The second set found the Cavaliers with a bit more pressure from Vieux Montreals offence. The Cavaliers struggled defensively missing a few key balls but would not let the pressure overcome their emotions and concentration. The Cavaliers unfortunately fell just short of a second set victory losing 22-25. With a fifteen point third set underway, the Cavaliers regained their momentum and challenged Vieux Montreal on every ball they played. With the score tied at 15 to 15, it was Champlains heart that pushed the Cavaliers forward into victory. The Men's Soccer team performed extremely well on Friday night Oct 1st as they visited College Lionel-Groulx. It was early in the 9th minute when captain Alex Iulianella won a ball in the midfield and sent Hamza Adiem forward. Adiem's sudden stop and turn shook off L-G defenders and slipped a ball to striker Alexandre Mongrain whose blast in the low corner was unstoppable. In the 22nd minute defender Pier-Luc Tremblay hit a big diagonal ball that found Mongrain out on the wing. His 2nd effort freed up the ball that fell to Adiem who one-timed a left footed shot into the top corner from 28 yards out. The Cavs kept going and in the 30th minute Adiem's diagonal pass was run onto by winger Nicolas Dupuis who cut the ball back from the end line to the top of the 18 yard box where Iulianella ripped a shot for the teams 3rd goal. With the score 3-0 at half, the Cavaliers picked up where they left off and scored in the 2nd minute of the 2nd half. Amine Belakehal passed to Emanuel Lucia who Spread the ball out wide to an on-running Mongrain whose cut inside freed him for a left-footed strike that found the back of the net. Lucia started a play combining with Mongrain again in the 54th minute centering the ball to Iulianella who chipped it over forward Christopher Ambar who dummied the ball with an on-rushing Nicolas Dupuis whose shot found the net for a 5-0 lead. The Cavaliers held off LG's offense and finished the game with 5-0 victory. The Women's Soccer team headed to Lionel-Groulx with a 1-5 season record looking for their second victory of the year. It wasn't too long before the Cavaliers dominated the game with defensive player Jade Poudrier putting in 2 goals followed by Ariane Simonelis 1 and Lisa Marie Brosseau 1. Coming off 2 straight wins the Cavaliers looked to cap a big weekend with a win against visiting Vanier College. The Cavaliers once again came out strong for the 4th consecutive game and spread the ball around creating several scoring chances. In the 10th minute of play Vanier earned themselves a corner-kick. As Champlain goalkeeper Shawn Galego Do Couto came out to challenge the in-swinging cross, he mishandled the ball and dropped it where an opposing player was waiting giving the visitors the early 1-0 lead. In the 53rd minute of play defender Hanna Benavidas Zeidan passed a ball down the flank to teammate Hamza Adiem who beat his man and slipped in a through ball to winger Nicolas Dupuis who made no mistake and coolly tucked in Champlain's first goal and his 3rd of the season. It was also Hamza Adiem's 3rd assist in the last 2 games. After some heavy pressure from the relentless Cavaliers, second half substitute Emanuel Lucia sent in a perfectly timed pass in the 75th minute to the on-coming Christopher Ambar whose shot could not be saved by Vanier's keeper. The Cavaliers came very close to running up the score in the last few minutes when substitute Antoine Noel and veteran Hamza Adiem just missed from two close range opportunities. The game ended 2-1 for Champlain extending their win streak to 3 games. The Cavaliers travel next to Lionel-Groulx on Friday night Oct 1st. The Champlain Cavaliers Men's Basketball team traveled to Quebec City last Saturday to play an exhibition game against the Rouge et Or from the University of Laval. The Cavaliers were well greeted and had the opportunity to sit down and discuss basketball technique and objectives with many local high school and university coaches and players. The Cavaliers and the Rouge et Or kicked off their exhibition game with pressure on both sides of the court. The Cavaliers started slow in the first quarter and had to make a few necessary adjustments to Laval's game. Second efforts allowed the Cavaliers to make a few key offensive rebounds which increased their momentum and concentration in the second quarter. The energy exerted by the Cavaliers was rewarded as the Cavs walked into their locker room at half time with a 6 point lead. The second half of the game found the Cavaliers and Laval struggling defensively as baskets were being scored frequently on both sides of the court. Fourth quarter left the Cavaliers falling behind as the Rouge et Or changed up their defense to counter attack the Cavaliers offense led by Youssef Ouahrig with over 30 points. The Cavaliers finished the game down by 15 points however were extremely pleased with their effort and concentration. The Men's Basketball team next travels to Toronto, Ontario to play against Durham College and George Brown University October 2nd & 3rd.

The Men’s Soccer Team recorded their second consecutive win Friday night when they travelled to Dawson College (Sept 24). The Cavaliers started strong, taking the play to the Dawson Blues. An opening scoring chance resulted in a corner kick for the visiting Cavaliers. Veteran Hamza Adiem swirled in a dangerous free kick that found striker Christopher Ambar’s head. The ball went off the crossbard and deflected off a few Dawson defenders and Cavaliers players before popping out to forward Alexandre Mongrain who one timed a hard drive that managed to sneak under the crossbar for the opening goal just 6 minutes in. The teams battled for possession and Dawson managed to convert a counter-attack in the 20th minute to level the score. At the 38th minute mark, Hamza Adiem curled in another dangerous corner kick that rookie defender Christophe De Guise - St-Germain met with a solid header from the top of the 18 yard box and found its way over the goalkeeper and into the top corner of the net. Only 2 minutes after, it was Hamza Adiem back at it. He sent in a perfect diagonal through ball that found winger Nicolas Dupuis running in alone against the ‘keeper and calmly tucked the ball into the near post for a 3-1 lead. Dawson managed to get one back in the 67th minute off a miscommunication between Cavaliers players. A close range hard drive gave Cavaliers goalkeeper David Lewis-Lamoureux no chance, despite having made several huge stops throughout the game. With the score at 3-2 the visiting Cavaliers stood strong and withheld everything Dawson could throw at them. Finally in the 90th minute of play, with the Dawson goalkeeper way out of his net to support his team on an offensive corner kick, the cavaliers struck again. A brilliant save from ‘keeper David Lewis-Lamoureux and a clearance from a Cavaliers defender found rookie Pierre-Alexandre Cournoyer in a foot race towards the empty Dawson goal, as he crossed the half line, Dawson defenders managed to close him up, yet a quick acting explosive run from rookie Antoine Noel gave an option to Cournoyer, he passed the ball forward and Noel made no mistake tucking home the insurance goal from outside the 18 yard box. The game ended 4-2 and the Cavaliers moved up to a four way tie for first place at this early stage in the season.

After a season opening loss followed by a tie, the men's soccer team managed to get back on the right foot with a solid 2-0 victory over visiting Sainte-Foy this past Sunday, September 19th. The Cavaliers came out strong generating several scoring chances in the opening minutes. It was off a missed shot on target by team captain Alex Iulianella that the Cavaliers opened the scoring in the 26th minute of play. Veteran Alexandre Mongrain took advantage as Iulianella's shot rolled to his feet, he quickly side stepped a defender and tucked away a shot at the back of Sainte-Foy's net. The Cavaliers closed out the half on a strong note by creating a few more scoring chances. The second half saw the Cavaliers dominate in ball possession, however lacked in the offensive third of the field. The defence carefully cleared away any danger Sainte-Foy threw at them. They remained well organized at the back, yet lacked the killer instinct to put the game away. Hamza Adiem's corner-kick was met by defender Hanna Benavidas-Zeidan's diagonal header which found the back of the net in the 81st minute. This goal gave the Cavaliers a cushion which they were looking for all game. The team hung on until the final whistle and goalkeeper Shawn Galego DoCouto recorded his team's second consecutive shutout in his first start of the season. The Cavaliers next travel to Catalogna Sports Complex where they will play Dawson College on Friday, September 24th at 9:00 PM followed with hosting Vanier College at Seaway Park on Sunday, September 26th at 9:00 PM.

Sunday Sept 19th, the Women's Soccer team played host to Les Dynamiques of Cegep Sainte-Foy. The Cavaliers dominated the first half of play coming just shy of numerous scoring opportunities. The Cavaliers continued to push forward but came up short on a quick break away shot by one of the Dynamique forwards who chipped it over the Cavalier goalie's reach. The Cavaliers came out in the second half with fire under their cleats. Their effort and determination would not be unrecognized as they remained in the defensive zone of the visiting team for a majority of the half. Again without luck, the Cavaliers fell short as the Dynamiques slipped through the defensive line and tucked away a second ball making the final score 0-2 for Sainte-Foy. The Cavaliers put forward a strong battle and showed to their fans that they are determined and more hungry than ever for their first win. After a frustrating home opener, the Men's Soccer team were looking for redemption in game 2 of their season. They were taking on the Islanders of John Abbott College. With 2 starters from Friday's loss to FX-G not available, the coaching staff juggled their line-up and made some adjustments. The game began with a sense of urgency and determination. The Cavaliers played balls into dangerous areas and created some scoring opportunities. The defence managed to keep things tight and limit John Abbott's ball possesion and scoring chances. In the 32 minute the Cavaliers strung together 3 passes in the midfield, then squared a ball out to over-lapping right back Hanna Benevidas-Zeidan who was back at his usual spot after serving a 1 game suspension stemming back from last season's playoffs. His cross found left winger Nicolas Dupuis inside the the 18 yard box, Dupuis made no mistake and buried a left footed volley in the top corner. However, the celebrations did not last long as the linesman raised his flag for an offside position. The game pressed on with a high quick tempo, and despite some light occasional rain the Cavaliers managed to control ball possesion and continue pressing forward. Rookie midfielder Amine Belakehal had an outstanding game in the defensive midfield position keeping John Abbott's key player at bay all game, forcing him back many times and not allowing him to generate much offence. The few chances the Islanders did have came off some corner kicks and free-kicks which the Cavaliers players collectively did an excellent job of clearing. The last few minutes had the Cavaliers come inches of their first win of the season, however, veteran's Alex Iulianella and Christopher Ambar's opportunities went just wide of the John Abbott goal. The game ended 0-0, yet was a huge improvement from the team's opening loss. despite the goal-less draw it was probably the Cavaliers most consistent 90 minutes of soccer in the last few seasons. Definitely a sign that things are going in the right direction. The Cavaliers play host to Ste-Foy on Sunday September 19th at Seaway Park. Kick off is set at 4pm.

Champlain College Men's Soccer team hosted defending FQSE champions FX-Garneau in the league opener last Saturday September 10th. The game began with the Cavaliers commiting several unforced errors and taking unnecessary fouls. This put the team under much pressure on opening night. It was the visiting FX-Garneau that took the lead on a through ball which sent one of their strikers in alone past the Cavaliers' defenders, a moment of hesitation from Cavaliers goalkeeper allowed the visitors to take a 1-0 lead just after the 10 minute mark. The Cavaliers managed to come out stronger in the second half, taking the play to the opposition and generating some scoring opportunities. The Cavaliers fought back and managed to close the gap with a goal from rookie winger Nicolas Dupuis. However just minutes later, FX-G regained their 2 goal cushion with a goal scrum that FX-G player Patrice Dion managed to toe-poke in ahead of Cavaliers defence and goalkeeper. Champlain did have an opportunity to comeback with a penalty kick, however it was shot off the post. The cavaliers were down 2 men in the final 15 minutes of the game, yet still pressed forward creating some scoring chances, but failed to finish. When the final whistle blew, the Cavaliers lost 3-1.

The Champlain Cavaliers got off to an early 1-0 lead when veteran striker Christopher Ambar's 25 yard strike managed to elude Concordia's goalkeeper and find the back of the net. The Cavaliers still in try-out faze, fielded 12 recruits and only 5 returning veterans. Veteran keeper Shawn Galego Do Couto made some stellar saves to keep Concordia's offence at bay. The teams then exchanged some quick goals during the second half in what was a well balanced game. Cavaliers' rookie Michael Moyo cleverly slipped passed the Concordia defence and around their keeper to tuck in a well played ball from his teammate. Rookie Goalkeeper Gabriel Zappitelli made a couple of last ditch saves and the Cavaliers defence held on to preserve the victory 3 to 2. The Cavaliers Home and Season Opener is this Friday September 10th, 9pm at Seaway Park in Saint-Lambert.
